Starting out

Freelance journalism

By admin In Advice

Whether you’re already a journalist thinking about making the leap, or you’re new to the profession, here are some key ways to stand out as a freelancer

Get a website. It doesn’t have to be anything flash. Just a simple WordPress or SquareSpace showcasing your writing style.

Make some contacts. Email editors and commissioning editors at publications you want to write for. Ask if they have 15 minutes to meet you for a coffee.

Follow editors on Twitter – they often tweet when they are commissioning or looking for a particular story.

Join some Facebook groups for freelance journalists. Not only is it a good way to find work, you can build up a support network, or just have a place to moan.

Sign up for newsletters which advertise publications looking for pitches. Sian Meades’ ‘Freelance Writing Jobs’ is a good one.

Consider doing some copywriting to supplement your journalism income. Websites such as The Dots and Fiverr allow you to advertise your writing skills to companies and brands.
